This appeal came from the association of temple heads in Nuwara Eliya, represented by Venerable Makadura Rathana Thera and Venerable Kalugahakadura Vijitha Thera. The monks criticized the ongoing legal actions against Gnanasara, arguing that they have cast a severe shadow over the dignity of the monastic order in a manner more damaging than during times of foreign rule. They emphasized that the current treatment of Gnanasara goes beyond mere legal proceedings against an individual monk. “What has transpired is not just a legal action against one monk, but a serious affront to the dignity of all monks, worse than under colonial governance. The Maha Sangha and responsible parties in the nation must take immediate notice,” they asserted. Concerns were also raised about the silence of the high-ranking monks and monastic councils regarding this matter, with suspicions of political influence from a ruling party clouding their response. The monks urged the senior clergy to disregard any such pressures and to advocate for a fair intervention on behalf of Gnanasara. “If there are no such pressures, we call upon the Maha Nayaka Theras to urgently address this situation and to facilitate a just resolution for Venerable Gnanasara,” they stated. The severe prison sentence facing Gnanasara, related to contempt of court, was reinstated after the Supreme Court annulled a previous presidential pardon. Given these circumstances, the monks argue that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake should act within constitutional powers to reconsider a compassionate decision regarding Gnanasara. The urgency of their plea underscores the entwined fates of both the monk and the broader monastic community, as they navigate a complex landscape of legal and political pressures. — R.F.M.
