Health Ministry Warns of Misinformation on Use of Firewood The Health Ministry has issued a warning regarding misleading media reports about the use of firewood for cooking, highlighting the potential for unnecessary public panic and the risk of exacerbating serious issues within the energy sector. Officials pointed out that if a significant number of people shift from using firewood to gas or electricity due to erroneous media promotions, it could place immense pressure on the energy sector. Such a transition, driven by misinformation, could destabilize supply and increase demand disproportionately. Furthermore, the ministry emphasized that for those who have easy access to firewood and use it safely and correctly, there are no valid reasons to abandon its use. The officials clarified that accurate information is crucial to ensure public understanding and correct any misconceptions. A detailed discussion took place recently between Dr. Chandani Withana, Director of Environmental and Occupational Health at the Health Ministry, and Lakshmenendra Damayanthakumara, Senior Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Mass Media, where the issue was thoroughly examined. Authorities indicated that the scientific insights provided by experts aimed at promoting public health should not be misrepresented in a way that alters their original meaning, thus leading the public astray. In light of this situation, the necessity to communicate accurate information promptly to the public was discussed, and it is anticipated that official updates will be released to the media soon.
