Despite having received prior intelligence that could have potentially prevented the attacks, Jayasundara was implicated in a failure to act, leading to his conviction. During a court hearing yesterday, he emphasized his innocence, stating, "I have never committed any acts that led to deaths." Jayasundara voiced his concerns regarding the injustices he has faced since the incident, arguing that he was unfairly targeted while others in positions of responsibility were not. Speaking further, he remarked, "From the day I joined the police, I have taken maximum action in my capacity. The situation has felt unjust since the very beginning, particularly with regards to the committee headed by Wijith Malalgoda. Alongside multiple other officers, I was involved in this scenario, yet only I bear the brunt of the consequences." Jayasundara expressed profound distress over his current state, stating, "Although I have lost my position, I find myself in a situation where my fundamental rights are being violated. I am under immense pressure due to fundamental rights cases and civil suits since the day of the incident. I implore the court to consider the plight of my children and wife." Affirming his commitment to justice, he insisted, "Since the day I joined the police, I have never acted in a manner that would unjustly harm anyone. According to my beliefs, I owe it to my past actions to present this appeal. I am currently in a state of extreme vulnerability." As the proceedings continue, Jayasundara urged the court to take into account the extensive pressure he has faced from the day of the attacks up until now, questioning the fairness of the situation that solely targets him in a professional capacity as a Police Chief. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
