In a recent statement on his YouTube channel, Dr. Devasiri emphasized that this amendment is not just a policy decision; rather, it is crafted to serve questionable political motives. While he expressed no problem with judges serving until the age of 67, he critiqued the initiative as ethically dubious, suggesting it is motivated solely by the desire to prolong the tenure of certain individuals, including the current Chief Justice. He also cautioned that attempts to keep government-friendly individuals in positions of authority could severely undermine public trust in the judiciary. Dr. Devasiri noted that there is a growing perception among the public that the judiciary is becoming politicized, which could transform legal rulings into what he termed a "powerful battleground" for opposition against the government. He warned that any ruling issued by the courts could be dismissed as a product of political influence if such measures continue. Additionally, he commented on recent court rulings, including the death sentences handed down to the former Secretary of Defense and the Inspector General of Police for their failure to prevent the Easter attacks, suggesting that partisan bias in law enforcement raises suspicions within society. He pointed out that while one side may view this as a fulfillment of justice, another may perceive it as a political maneuver. Decisions like the extension of judges' terms only serve to reinforce these suspicions. Dr. Devasiri reaffirmed that judicial independence remains a vital societal issue and is the government's responsibility to uphold. Importantly, he highlighted that any short-term benefits derived from retaining individuals in their positions are dwarfed by the long-term damage inflicted on the judicial system.
