Critique of Government's Failure to Deliver on Promises The current government has completely undermined the public mandate it received following its rise to power, with citizens disillusioned and quickly gravitating towards the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, according to Parliamentarian S.M. Marikkar. In remarks to the media, Marikkar lamented that while past protests against authoritarianism were commonplace, the nation now faces an unprecedented level of executive overreach reminiscent of the Mahinda Rajapaksa era. He emphasized that the government is stifling the rights of the public to express their opinions and the freedom of speech, actively suppressing journalists to conceal its own inadequacies. "It is clear that they realize their failures," he asserted. While the government pledged during the election campaign to reduce the cost of living, Marikkar highlighted that they have been unable to decrease fuel prices, electricity tariffs, or the costs of essential goods and medicines. He accused the administration of plunging people into a dire situation where they can't afford three meals a day. Many citizens are now resorting to selling their gold jewelry due to a lack of funds. Marikkar warned that the government fears an uprising by the increasingly pressured populace, which is prompting them to introduce oppressive laws. He underscored that the only viable alternative to the National People's Power currently in the country is the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, which is committed to implementing genuine economic relief measures necessary for the nation. Marikkar further reiterated that his party has a strategic plan in place to attract at least $10 billion in direct foreign investment within the first year of governance, something the current administration has failed to achieve. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
