Parliament Faces Internal Debate Over Speaker Position Following No-Confidence Motion The Sri Lankan Parliament is currently embroiled in internal discussions regarding the future of the Speaker's position, as the ruling party deliberates on appointing a member from its ranks should there be a change or vacancy. This dialogue has emerged in light of the no-confidence motion submitted against the current Speaker, Dr. Jagath Vikramarathna, by the opposition. Sources indicate that if a change occurs in the Speaker's office, the ruling party's National People’s Power faction is advocating for the current Deputy Speaker, Dr. Riswi Nazeer, to be elevated to the position. Meanwhile, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna party has firmly stated that the role should rightfully belong to one of its own members. Reports suggest that if Dr. Nazeer's name is proposed for the Speaker's role, the main opposition coalition, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, has expressed willingness to support such a nomination. The date for discussing the no-confidence motion against Dr. Vikramarathna is yet to be determined, but it is expected to be established during the forthcoming parliamentary affairs committee meeting. However, certain elements of the motion are said to raise legal concerns, prompting a decision to seek the Attorney General's advice before proceeding. Given that obtaining the Attorney General's opinion may take some time, there are expectations that the discussions regarding the no-confidence motion could be significantly delayed. The appropriation bill for the fiscal year 2027 is scheduled to be presented in Parliament on November 12, with budget debates and final voting planned to take place by December 14. It is anticipated that the entire focus will shift towards the budget following next week's parliamentary sessions, leading political analysts to believe the no-confidence debate against the Speaker will be postponed until after the budget discussions conclude in December. In light of the possibility of further delays in addressing the no-confidence motion, opposition MPs are reportedly preparing to raise significant objections during Parliament’s upcoming sessions, signaling a robust response to any attempts to postpone the matter indefinitely. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
