"බන්ධනාගාරගත කරන්නේ මරණ දඬුවම ක්‍රියාත්මක කරන්න නෙවෙයි. රථවාහන වැරදි සම්බන්ධයෙන් බන්ධනාගාරගත වූ අයෙක් පවා එහිදී මිය ගිහින්. මේවා පාලනය කරන්න බැරි ආණ්ඩුවක් කොහොමද රටක් පාලනය කරන්නේ?" යනුවෙන් මද්දුම බණ්ඩාර මහතා ප්‍රශ්න කර සිටියේය. පසුගිය මැතිවරණයේදී සියයට 42ක ජනවරමක් පමණක් ලැබූ ආණ්ඩුව, වර්තමානයේ ජනතාවගෙන් ඈත් වෙමින් පවතින බවත්, එම ජනතා විරෝධය මර්දනය කිරීමට සහ විපක්ෂය දමනය කිරීමට මෙවැනි කෘතිම අර්බුද නිර්මාණය කර හදිසි නීතිය වැනි මර්දනකාරී නීති ගෙන ඒමට ආණ්ඩුව උත්සාහ කරන බවට තමන් සැක කරන බව ද ඔහු වැඩිදුරටත් පැවසීය. හොරුන් ඇල්ලීමේ මුවාවෙන් රටේ ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදය විනාශ කිරීමට ඉඩ දිය නොහැකි බව ද මහලේකම්වරයා මෙහිදී අවධාරණය කළේය. Highlighting the irony of the government's claims of controlling organized crime, he pointed out the administration's apparent inability to manage the inmate population effectively. Bandara underscored that the frequency of such incidents within correctional facilities is no mere coincidence and emphasized that the government's acknowledgment of their failures, especially through statements made by the relevant minister, reveals a lack of competence in addressing the situation. “Prisons are not meant for executing death penalties. Even individuals detained for minor traffic offenses have died within those walls. How can a government that cannot maintain order within its prisons be expected to govern the country successfully?” he questioned. The current administration, which secured only 42% of the vote in the last election, is increasingly alienated from the populace, Bandara noted. He suspects that the government may resort to creating artificial crises to suppress public dissent and implement oppressive laws, such as emergency regulations. “We cannot allow the sanctity of our democracy to be compromised under the guise of fighting crime,” he asserted. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
