This scheme reportedly involved misappropriating approximately 30 million Sri Lankan Rupees, which were deposited into their accounts and those of their relatives. The arrests were noted by District Secretary Tushari Thennekone, who stated that they followed internal investigations prompted by an anonymous complaint. The inquiry revealed discrepancies concerning the distribution of funds from the first quarter of 2024 aimed at assisting impoverished communities. As part of the ongoing investigation, the senior police officers at the Hatton division have been informed to take legal action against the implicated individuals. The initial complaint leading to the arrests was submitted by Samira Gamalath, the local secretary of the Norwood area, highlighting concerns over the handling of welfare funds. In light of this incident, management staff at the Norwood District Secretariat have been implicated as facilitating the fraudulent collection of funds intended for aid programs. Investigations have disclosed that both the management assistant and the community mobilization officer had collaborated in misappropriating these funds.
