Sri Lanka Emerging Amidst Global Criticism, Says Agriculture Minister In a bold assertion, Sri Lanka's Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Namal Karunarathna, highlighted the country's remarkable progress over the past two years, positioning it among the fastest-growing nations in the world despite facing severe international condemnation in recent times. Speaking at a public rally organized by the National People's Power in Nikaweratiya, Karunarathna emphasized the challenges Sri Lanka had overcome following a devastating economic collapse. He recalled a time when the country sank to such depths that even an Indian vendor was sending money back to Sri Lanka through small, informal channels. The Deputy Minister pointed out the significant turnaround achieved by the government, noting the absence of shortages in financial resources crucial for the nation's development initiatives. "We have successfully rebuilt a nation that was once on the brink of collapse," he asserted. However, he acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly within the agricultural sector and other fields, where officials are grappling with a shortage of human resources and technological issues. Karunarathna remarked that the government is actively addressing these barriers to facilitate future progress. Further elaborating, he stated, "Our government has only been in power for about two years. The electorate granted us power for five years, which means we cannot achieve everything expected of us within the current timeframe. Therefore, we are following a structured plan to guide the country forward, understanding that not all ambitions can be realized at once." *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
