By the year 2025, the global increase in HIV/AIDS is expected to rise by twenty percent compared to 2022. The list of countries experiencing this trend includes Afghanistan, Algeria, Armenia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Congo, Costa Rica, Egypt, Kyrgyzstan, Madagascar, Nigeria, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, the Philippines, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tunisia, Venezuela, and Yemen. While global reports indicate a decrease of forty percent in AIDS cases since 2010 by 2024, Sri Lanka has reported a concerning 48% rise in the number of HIV-positive cases during the same period, as noted by the National Anti-AIDS Unit. Since 2023, the districts of Gampaha and Colombo have seen a higher occurrence of individuals infected with the HIV/AIDS virus. In just the first nine months of 2025, a total of 639 individuals living with HIV/AIDS have been identified in Sri Lanka, reflecting a six percent increase compared to the previous year. Current estimates suggest that the number of individuals living with HIV/AIDS in the country ranges between 4,900 and 6,500, according to medical professionals. Dr. Sathya Herath, a specialist in the National Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS Control Program, highlighted that men are more likely to contract HIV/AIDS than women, attributing this trend to the practice of using injections during drug acquisition. As cases are expected to rise further in 2025 compared to 2024, mobile clinics have been launched in the Gampaha and Colombo districts to enhance early detection and control of the disease.
