Concerns Raised Over Government's Plan to Close Schools with Fewer Than 50 Students Joseph Stalin, the General Secretary of the Lanka Teachers' Union, has questioned the government's authority to close schools with fewer than 50 students, highlighting the lack of a clear mandate for such drastic measures. During a media briefing, he criticized officials from the National Education Institute for failing to implement effective educational reforms, which he claims have resulted in ongoing failures, yet the same officials continue to receive salaries while remaining inactive. Stalin emphasized that the government has been persistently vocal about its plans to shut down low-enrollment schools across the country. He argued that there is no ethical justification for authorities to close these rural schools that serve the children of the community. He pointed out that the attempts to introduce a new educational reform for the upcoming first-grade curriculum have been completely unsuccessful due to the absence of a proper strategy. Even the teacher handbooks related to the new curriculum have not yet been printed and distributed to educators, underscoring the government's inefficiency. Despite these setbacks in the reform process, he asserted that the responsible officials at the National Education Institute continue to draw their full salaries without any accountability. Stalin noted that, although a committee was formed by the National Education Institute to investigate these issues following government intervention, there has been no update on the committee's findings or whether its recommendations have been implemented. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
