According to officials from the Nuwara Eliya Conservation Department, the individual entered the protected area before igniting the fire. The Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court was informed of the case on the 5th of this month. Following a guilty plea, the court ordered the offender to pay a fine of Rs. 40,000 for trespassing into the reserve and for starting the blaze. Additionally, the fire resulted in damages amounting to Rs. 403,509.22 for one hectare of the reserve, which the court mandated the defendant to compensate. The ruling was made by Magistrate Buddika Harshani Dharmadasa, emphasizing the need for accountability in preserving Sri Lanka's environmental sanctuaries. The perpetrator, identified as 48-year-old Mohammad Farook, residing on Edirisinhal Mawatha in Nuwara Eliya, allegedly started the fire on July 21 for recreational purposes. Following the incident, the conservation officers undertook extensive efforts to control the resulting fire.
