Post-2000 Water Reservoir Capacity Surpasses Historical Levels, Says Expert The water capacity of reservoirs built in Sri Lanka since the year 2000 has now exceeded that of those constructed during the 25-year reign of King Parakramabahu, according to Lasantha Suriyabandara, Director of the Water Science and Disaster Management Division at the Irrigation Department. During a discussion with Derana Television, Suriyabandara emphasized that the common perception within society—that the development of the island’s irrigation system is solely reliant on government efforts—is fundamentally flawed. He noted a significant transformation in the irrigation sector since 2000, highlighting that major projects such as the Ma Oya, Weheragala, Rambakan Oya, and Deduru Oya have been completed with financial and technical assistance from the Irrigation Department. Furthermore, he revealed that colossal projects like the Yan Oya and Moragahakanda were realized through foreign aid, marking a shift in the landscape of water storage in the country. As a result of these developments, Sri Lanka’s overall water storage capacity has nearly doubled compared to previous levels, Suriyabandara pointed out. The collaborative efforts between the Irrigation Department and the Mahaweli Authority have enabled effective water management, even amidst current arid climate conditions, he added. Suriyabandara also acknowledged the invaluable contributions made by Sri Lankan irrigation engineers from the time of the post-independence Senanayake Samudraya and Gal Oya projects to the present day. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
