Severe Reduction in Northern Railway Services Causes Passenger Discontent The daily number of railway services on the northern route has plummeted from 18 to just 8, significantly inconveniencing passengers, according to the Union of Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters. This drastic cut has severely limited the travel options available to commuters, leaving many struggling to secure transportation. Kasun Chamara Jayasekara, the union’s secretary, highlighted the challenges faced by travelers due to these service reductions. He pointed out that only a few limited services, including intercity express trains and night mail services, operate on Wednesdays, exacerbating the difficulties for commuters. Furthermore, the 'Yal Devi' express train, which is a vital link for passengers, currently runs only every other day, leaving those traveling on the northern routes under considerable strain. Jayasekara elaborated on the persistent challenges faced by passengers as they navigate the limitations of the train schedule. Reports indicate that train services along routes from Colombo Fort to Badulla, Matale, Kandy, and Hatton have also been drastically curtailed, contributing to more frustration for travelers. Currently, only 8 out of 42 daily passenger and freight train services are operational, with the remaining 34 services entirely suspended. Last month, following the resumption of train services to Gampola, the union has repeatedly urged authorities to restore normal operations on the upcountry line. However, these requests have yet to elicit any significant response from the officials, Jayasekara noted. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
