Sri Lankan MP Remanded in Connection with Rs. 81 Million Bribery Case Chamara Sampath Dasanayake, a parliamentarian from the New Democratic Front and former state minister, has been ordered by Colombo's Chief Magistrate, Asanga S. Bodaragama, to be remanded until October 23 in connection with a bribery scheme involving Rs. 81 million. The investigation centers on allegations that during his term as a state minister, Dasanayake improperly issued an export license for a specific company for the export of betel leaves, in a manner that bypassed established procedures. This investigation has led to claims of bribery involving his former personal secretary and a betel company. This morning, the MP was summoned before the Bribery or Corruption Investigation Commission to provide a statement regarding the allegations against him. After recording his statement, he was taken into custody by commission officials. Subsequently, he appeared before the Chief Magistrate’s Court at approximately 4:00 PM. Officials from the commission revealed that five charges have been filed against the MP under the anti-corruption law, along with a report compiling evidence from witnesses based on a certificate issued by the commission's Director-General under Section 149 of the relevant legislation. Representing the MP, attorney Kalin Indatissa argued before the court that none of the witness statements referenced in the evidence compilation report indicated any wrongdoing related to the acceptance or solicitation of bribes by his client. Additionally, he submitted medical records related to his client to support a bail application. After considering the arguments from both sides, the Chief Magistrate ruled that there is sufficient evidence to continue with the investigation into the alleged offenses. However, he stated that the presented evidence did not warrant the granting of bail at this time. As a result, the Chief Magistrate rejected the bail application, thereby ordering that the MP remain in custody until the next court date on October 23. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
