He suggested that such an action could facilitate government support in securing votes during the upcoming provincial council elections in the Northern Province. However, the MP warned that this reflects a political crackdown and a double game being played by the government, emphasizing that he does not personally endorse such actions. He also criticized authorities for their silence on several reports detailing significant corruption and fraud in the North, noting that despite considerable expenditures—amounting to 14 million rupees purportedly for drug eradication—authorities have continued to distribute bar licenses extensively. Though MP S. Sridharan proclaimed that he has been issued a bar license and expressed fears of retaliation against him, Ranatunga highlighted a troubling lack of legal action against such issues, suggesting government interference in enforcement efforts.
