Bakery Prices Set to Rise by Rs. 5 as Industry Faces Crisis The price of a 450-gram loaf of bread is set to increase by Rs. 5 starting midnight today, following an announcement from N.K. Jayawardena, the chairman of the All-Ceylon Bakery Owners' Association. This decision comes amid severe challenges facing the bakery industry. Despite previously agreeing to await government intervention for ten days regarding a Rs. 13 increase in the price of wheat flour, the bakery sector experienced no constructive response, leading to the current price hike. Jayawardena emphasized the urgent need to address the crisis the industry is facing. On October 20, major flour companies in the country raised the price of a kilogram of wheat flour by Rs. 13. Although industry standards typically dictate that bakery product prices should rise concurrently with flour costs, the association opted to postpone such increases upon the request of the Consumer Affairs Authority. After the Minister of Trade returned to the country on October 28, he engaged in discussions with the flour companies and promised a resolution. However, after waiting for ten days, bakery owners were left frustrated without any practical solutions forthcoming. Jayawardena stressed that, despite the pressure from bakery owners, the association sought to provide consumers with some relief by delaying the decision. He expressed regret over the delay and the difficult position it places on bakery owners. The ongoing crisis in the bakery industry is not solely the fault of the government or the flour companies. Jayawardena pointed out that rising prices of imported materials, including fuel, exacerbated the situation amid ongoing global conflicts. "Ninety percent of the raw materials used in bakery production are imported. Currently, the price of a kilogram of sugar exceeds Rs. 250. Costs for eggs, margarine, vegetables, fuel, and electricity bills have skyrocketed. If we were to justify all these costs by increasing prices, a single loaf of bread could not be sold for less than Rs. 500. However, considering the public, we decided on a modest increase of just Rs. 5," he remarked. Jayawardena highlighted a straightforward solution that the government could implement. He assured that if the government were to remove the Rs. 13 tax imposed on imported wheat flour, the association would be prepared to reverse this Rs. 5 increase immediately, ensuring that consumers would not face further financial pressures. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
