Electrical Grid Collapse Results in Significant Economic Loss for Sri Lanka A nationwide electrical outage that occurred on October 17 has resulted in an estimated economic loss of around 19 billion rupees to the local economy, with direct financial damages to the electricity sector ranging from 2.3 billion to 5.8 billion rupees, according to a recent report by SenFin Securities, a leading stock brokerage firm. The report, titled "Senfin – Sri Lanka Electricity Generation Review," identifies an imbalance in the national electricity system as the primary cause of the grid collapse. Additionally, a technical failure at the Upper Kotmale hydroelectric power station on October 16 exacerbated the crisis. The power supply, which was disrupted at approximately 11:43 AM, took over six hours to restore, with full service finally resuming around 6:30 PM. During this period, the country lost a significant electricity generation capacity, estimated to be between 8 and 15 gigawatt-hours (GWh). When evaluating the losses, the report indicates that the financial impact of every kilowatt-hour lost is assessed at approximately 212 rupees, thus placing the estimated direct revenue loss for the electricity sector alone between 1.7 billion and 3.7 billion rupees. Furthermore, the need to activate thermal power plants to restore balance to the collapsed system resulted in considerable fuel costs, pushing the total losses in the electricity sector to potentially as high as 5.8 billion rupees. *Note: In case of any discrepancy between the Sinhala and English versions, the Sinhala version shall prevail.
