Just before 11 PM last night, the final pieces of evidence for the prosecution were presented. The high-profile case is being overseen by a three-judge panel of the Colombo Permanent High Court, led by Chief Justice Navaratne Marasinghe, alongside Justices Sujeewa Nisshanka and Ramanaadan Kannan. Following the conclusion of the prosecution’s case, examination of the evidence is expected to take place. Once the final written submissions from both sides are submitted, a date for the verdict will be set. In total, there are 31 cases related to the Easter Sunday attacks. Out of these, five cases are being processed in the Permanent High Court, with three verdicts already issued, leading to sentences for the convicted. These involved significant charges against former security chief Hemasiri Fernando and former Inspector General of Police Pujith Jayasundara, who were sentenced to death after being found guilty of 854 counts, including alleged negligence in handling intelligence reports prior to the attacks. Separately, the Sabaragamuwa Provincial High Court has also heard cases pertaining to damages inflicted on seven Buddhist statues and several deities in the Mawanella area, where 11 defendants have similarly been sentenced for their offenses. The verdicts for these cases have already been published, with more awaiting formal announcement. The ongoing significant case concerning the Easter Sunday attacks has also seen related charges against six defendants linked to a terrorist training camp and the possession of explosives in the Puttalam region. The trials are expected to proceed efficiently within the Colombo High Court system. Despite the complexity and length of the hearings, which recently have extended till around 10 PM nightly, they have been conducted with notable regularity, even during the judicial recesses this week. During the court proceedings, several testimonies have corroborated claims made by the accused, with a key witness providing insights while serving as a government witness. Initially, the trial was conducted on a monthly basis, shifting to two to three days a week, and has transitioned to daily hearings over the past year.
